This is Fort Ward State Park, in the southwestern area of Bainbridge Island, Washington.

A well-maintained path goes about 200 feet from the beach-front parking area to the fort.

Bunkers such this one were built around 1910. Fort Ward, like other forts of its type, was not visible to ships and had enormous retractable cannons.

The cannons were raised to shoot, capable of shooting a shell that weighed as much as a small car for twenty miles, then retracted down and out of sight to be reloaded.

You can explore freely in this fort.

Hmmm. I wonder what is beyond that dark doorway
at the bottom of the stairs?
