During your drive to Republic, you'll pass through miles of desert-like area. Don't be fooled! Republic, and Curlew Lake are beautiful destinations.

On the way to Republic, many people stop and stay a night in Spokane or Winthrop.

If you're coming from the south, Spokane would be your likely stop first stop. Then make it a point to spend at least a night in Winthrop!

If you're approaching Republic from Seattle, you'll drive into Winthrop on your way to Republic. No matter what you do, plan to spend at least a few hours in Winthrop!

While in Republic, you're really missing something if you don't drive a few miles east of town to gorgeous Curlew Lake.

Before you drive out to Curlew Lake, ask somebody for directions to the state park on the lake. I swear, when you see Curlew Lake you'll wanna move there!

In any event, if you have time, be sure to visit Winthrop and Spokane while in eastern Washington. Each town has its own uniquely wonderful and scenic qualities.

Eagle Track Raceway is a big dirt track about a half-mile from Republic. We'd never been to a dirt track before. Cathryn kept clutching my arm and shouting, "Go! Go!"

Republic, Washington!

Find 50-million year old fossils in Republic, Washington, just a few minutes walk from the town's main street! (There's parking at the fossil site, if you'd prefer to drive) .
Fossils at this site are so abundant that you will probably almost immediately begin spotting fragments of fossils (and sometimes complete fossils) on the ground.

Before you go to the fossil site you must check in at the Stonerose Interpretive Center, where you will:
  • see examples of fossils on display
  • receive introductory information about the fossil site and
    fossil-finding tips from a staff member.
  • pay a nominal fee:
    • for a permit to be at the fossil site.
    • to rent the tools you'll need.
