A reader who visited Port Gamble wrote me to ask if the town is "real." Port Gamble is so immaculately maintained and the 1800's homes are in such pristine condition that she thought the town might have been built as a tourist attraction! But, Port Gamble certainly is "real" and people do live in the vintage homes.
The General Store houses two museums: Upstairs is a marvelous shell museum. In the bottom floor, which is approached from the rear of the building, there is a historical museum.

To get there:
The easiest way is to go to Poulsbo and ask a shopkeeper for directions to the Hood Canal Bridge (The Hood Canal Bridge is a straight shot, about 8 miles, from Poulsbo). When you get to the bridge, go on past it (instead of crossing it) and just follow the road for about two miles to Port Gamble.
If you'd like more detailed driving directions you'll find them here, in a copy of my reply to a friend who asked me to suggest a fun day-trip from Seattle.
We offer lodging in nearby Poulsbo (aka "Little Norway!").
