Discovery Bay Salmon Derby "This Derby was started in 1973 by the volunteer firefighters to raise money to buy equipment."
The Snug Harbor Cafe
One of our best rural northwest restaurants, the Snug Harbor Cafe is always busy. This restaurant does not need to advertise itself, as area residents provide a steady stream of repeat business. The cafe's exterior has been refinished since I took the photos at right.
"Southern hospitality" has nothing over rural
Northwest Hospitality. You could tell the folks at Snug Harbor Cafe that you're visiting from Mars, and they'll respond with congeniality and
excellent food at a very reasonable price.
Inside this restaurant, it's casual and pleasantly rustic. They've been known to sprinkle wood shavings on the floor -- a throwback to the days when wood shavings were put on the floor for barn dances.
Place your order at the counter and have a seat at a table. They'll let you know when your food is ready.
They usually don't have table waiters, but if they observe that you need assistance they'll bring your food to your table.
I hasten to say that this is not fast food. The Snug Harbor Cafe serves excellent meals at exceptionally reasonable prices, and they do it the Northwest way, from hamburgers to steaks and seafood!
If you decide to sit at the counter (And, IF you can find an empty stool), you're apt to find yourself participating in an animated conversation about the price of eggs.
Steaks, seafoods, hamburgers and REAL milk shakes. Cocktails and a good selection of premium beers.
Last time Cathryn and I stopped in, a lady came in and purchased several pounds of fresh local dungeness crab at a VERY good price.

Discovery Bay is about a half-hour drive north from
Poulsbo ("Little Norway"!), Washington. To get there from Poulsbo, go north. Cross the Hood Canal Bridge and follow the road toward Sequim. If you continue on past Discovery Bay, you'll soon come to
Sequim, then
Port Angeles.
When visiting
Discovery Bay, stay in in nearby
Sequim, to the north, or in
Poulsbo, about a half-hour to the south.
